The Cullinan, Rolls-Royce’s first SUV – and the world’s first “super luxury all terrain SUV” – is a stunning head-turner and a superior performer. But is it the the brand’s first off-roader? Hmmm … yes and no!

Is the Cullinan Rolls-Royce’s 4×4?

Today, many Rolls-Royce owners wouldn’t dream of taking their vehicle off-road. These are among the most luxurious motorcars in the world: why risk marring your gorgeous exterior finish with errant rocks or tree branches? They may opt for the Rolls-Royce 4×4 because of its elevated driving stance and because of the security and stability it conveys. The brand has been proactive in positioning the Cullinan as a more practical, family-friendly, every day vehicle – enveloped in luxury.

At the same time, though, the Cullinan is remarkably capable off road. In fact, its off-road mode takes you an additional 40 millimeters up for greater ground clearance – and it does so automatically. It can also drive through water up to 540 millimeters deep (though don’t ever drive through running water on roadways!)

But is the first Rolls-Royce SUV also the first off-roader for the brand? Not really! Considering that the company is over a century old, its first generations were – by necessity – off-road capable. This is simply because there were far fewer roads. Vehicles had to be able to take you there and back in conditions that, today, we would consider far less than optimal.

Off-Road Semantics

This is somewhat a matter of semantics. No, technically, there were other Rollers that could go off road. But it is the first contemporary off-roader the brand has produced. Either way, this Rolls-Royce 4×4 is a capable, exciting machine that will never leave you stranded.
