Rolls-Royce did not rise to the pinnacle of the luxury auto world – and remain there – by resting on its laurels. For over a century, the iconic brand has been on a path of continual innovation. The newest chapter: electric vehicles. Get ready to meet a new Rolls-Royce Phantom.

The “Right Way Forward” An Electric Rolls-Royce

Rolls-Royce embodies opulence, sparing no expense when it comes to enveloping owners in ultimate comfort and decadence. And no expense is spared at the pump either; the Phantom achieves 19 mpg highway and 11 mpg city. As CEO Torsten Müller-Ötvös explains, introducing an electric drivetrain is the “right way forward” for the brand.

What can we expect from this iteration? Well, the good news is that while it will be far more eco-conscious, the ride experience will be as luxurious as ever. The 2018 Phantom boasts an all new ultra-lightweight aluminum spaceframe; ever modest, Rolls-Royce calls it the “Architecture of Luxury.” It will underpin all future models, providing increased stiffness, intelligent suspension, and that distinctive sound-insulating “magic carpet” quality.

Unlike some other luxury brands, which use a “mass luxury” approach (i.e. they use the mass production framework and build on it), Rolls-Royce created its own architecture. This allows them to deliver an unparalleled, and customized, experience from the ground up.

it is this architecture that allows the integration of an electric drivetrain. Müller-Ötvös says, “The architecture of the new Phantom already copes for the electric requirement and is capable of delivering a full-electric drivetrain in the next decade.” The first electrified model will be the Phantom, but since all models use this architecture, it is more than possible that others will follow.
