More than a century after Rolls-Royce developed the iconic gasoline-powered brand, it has now turned its attention to electric powertrains. Six months ago, the manufacturer announced that its first luxury totally electric Spectre is being road-tested. Rolls-Royce has been considering making EVs for more than a decade, but the technology was not there to support a mammoth luxury car like Rolls-Royce.

THE WINTER TEST

Rolls-Royce Spectre winter test occurred at a temperature of -40 degrees Celsius (C) near the Arctic Circle.  Rolls-Royce vehicles have always been known to test in winter conditions.  Testing is usually conducted at their facility in Arjeplog, Sweden. The new Spectre will debut in the fourth quarter of 2023, and it will be the first Rolls-Royce EV.  The reason for conducting tests in such cold temperatures is the belief of the engineers that each system in the vehicle should perform well under extreme conditions. The Rolls-Royce Spectre winter test is the beginning phase of extreme testing of the vehicle to ensure that all systems will work admirably.  The Rolls-Royce EV has completed more than 25 percent of its testing goal.

WHAT DOES THE SPECTRE HAVE TO OFFER?

The silhouette of the Spectre is very similar to the Wraith but Rolls-Royce has mentioned that the Spectre will be the successor of the Phantom coupe, which was discontinued in 2016. A key feature about the Spectre is that, for the first time since 1926, the luxury car will run on 23-inch wheels. The Spectre still retains the iconic chrome decorations on the exterior. In addition, there is the iconic elongated bonnet and rectangular LED headlamps.

What is Rolls-Royce doing with the space under the hood of the Spectre? Early design reveals that the size of the bonnet may be reduced to make the car more aerodynamic.  Results from the Rolls-Royce Spectre winter test will tell that tale. Rolls-Royce has also performed some aerodynamic changes to the rear bumper with diffusers.

A redesigned Spirit of Ecstasy is still located in the same place on top of the bonnet. The only difference is that the ornament is more athletic and slightly lower. To improve the aerodynamics, the Spirit of Ecstasy’s wings have been floated at an angle.

So far, not much is known about the interior, but Rolls-Royce has promised that the inside will be very quiet. Without a traditional engine, the Spectre will be a low seater allowing everyone to enjoy a true cabin experience.

And what about the electrical connections? Rest assured, the Spectre will have big-time processing power with thousands of electrical connections for all types of digital functions. While the exact type of powertrain is not known, it will have to be one of the most powerful electric motors coupled with the largest battery pack available to power the Spectre. There is a rumor suggesting that the Spectre will have one electric motor for each wheel that could support all-wheel steering and improve the cornering behavior of the luxury car. Some speculate that the most likely specs for the Spectre will be: a dual-motor AWD and use a 111.5kWh battery with an estimated range of 350-400 miles.

The Rolls-Royce EV Spectre has been undergoing winter testing in Sweden and so far, no obvious issues have arisen. The Spectre will hopefully enter the market in the last quarter of 2023, but this also will depend on the status of the global supply chain. For those considering purchasing the Spectre, the base price will probably be around $350K; add in the super-luxury offerings and the car could be yours for about $600K.
